inp.polri.go.id – Papua. Papuan Police Chief (Kapolda Papua), Inspector General Mathius D. Fakhiri, S.I.K., was visited by the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) Ahmad Taufan Damanik in Jayapura, Monday (21/3).
The meeting was attended by the Commissioner of Komnas HAM, Beka Ulung Hapsara, and was accompanied by the high officials of the Papua Provincial Police (Polda Papua), the Head of Peace Operations Cartenz 2022, Commissioner Muhammad Firman, Head Representative of Komnas HAM Papua, Frits Ramandey, and Coordinator of Mediation for Komnas HAM, Asri Wahono.
In that meeting, Kapolda Papua said the situation in Papua mostly was already under control, it's just that several incidents in Yahukimo Regency caused casualties and damaged several properties.
Kapolda Papua stated that the incident in Dekai, the capital of Yahukimo Regency, on Tuesday (15/3) made the Police more patient and professional in upholding the law.
“Lately, the issue in the New Autonomous Regions (DOB) has surged, particularly the march of rejection from several individuals. I hope that in the future there will be no casualties from the community or security forces, as happened in Dekai," said Kapolda Papua.
Kapolda Papua admits that at this time he continues to use a soft approach to important figures in the local society and tried not to replace their roles because it will not be effective.
"Let's just let everything run naturally. Let the public figures, as our extensions to the community, convey the message of maintaining order and security. Polda Papua will continue to conduct the legal process transparently and professionally," said Kapolda Papua.
The chairman of Komnas HAM, Ahmad Taufan Damanik, said that the coordination between Komnas HAM and the National Police (Polri) does not only exist in Papua but also throughout Indonesia.
Law enforcement in Papua must still be carried out and not only in corridors that are considered red zone. Currently, Komnas HAM is proposing to conduct a peaceful dialogue in Papua between the government, OPM, community leaders, church leaders, traditional leaders within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
"And the plan has been approved by state officials," said Ahmad Taufan Damanik.
