Inp.polri.go.id - Tangerang. Customs officers at Soekarno-Hatta Internatl Airport in Tangerang, Banten, arrested an Indian man for allegedly attempting to smuggle four protected animals.
The Head of Soekarno-Hatta Customs, Gatot Sugeng Wibowo, said on Tuesday (5/11/2024) that the suspect, identified as STH (43), was caught with two Javan langurs (Trachypithecus auratus), an Ambon king parrot (Alisterus amboinensis), and a Javan hanging parrot (Loriculus pusillus) hidden in plastic boxes and animal bags among food, clothing, and toys.
“Our officers, suspecting the passenger’s luggage on IndiGo Airlines flight 6E-1602 bound for Mumbai, inspected and detained him for further investigation,” he said, as reported by antaranews.com..
The suspect allegedly acquired the animals from a Jakarta market to give them to his family. The Customs Office is investigating possible links to other wildlife smuggling cases involving Indian nationals at the airport.
He faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to Rp 5 billion under Indonesia’s Customs Law, as well as additional penalties under the Animal Quarantine Law.
