Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia has managed to avoid importing rice this year despite a global food crisis that has driven prices sharply higher in advanced economies, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman announced Sunday (24/8/2025).
“We should be grateful that domestic rice stocks are very secure, so this year we do not need to import rice. As of August, supplies remain safe and production is on track,” he said in a statement, as quoted by antaranews.com
The minister noted that Japan recorded a 90.7 percent surge in rice prices in July 2025, forcing citizens to queue for subsidized rice, while Indonesia strengthened food security through domestic output.
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Indonesia’s statistics agency, national rice production is projected to rise from 30.6 million tons in 2024 to as much as 35.6 million tons in 2025.
Government reserves reached a record 4.2 million tons, the highest in 57 years, with further harvests expected in September this year.
