Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia and the United Kingdom signed a practical arrangement agreement on Tuesday (21/10/2025) to repatriate two British citizens convicted of drug offenses.
The deal was signed by Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra and UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs Yvette Cooper.
Minister Yusril said the decision was made on humanitarian grounds, emphasizing Indonesia’s commitment to human rights protection. One of the British citizens, Lindsay June Sandiford (68), sentenced to death in 2012 and currently suffering from diabetes and hypertension, is held at Kerobokan Women’s Prison, Bali. Another one, Shahab Shahabadi (35), serving a life sentence since 2014 at Nusakambangan Island’s Kembangkuning Prison, suffers from skin and mental health disorders.
The repatriation process, Minister Yusril explained, follows established mechanisms involving legal verification, health assessments, and bilateral agreements. He noted that Indonesia has previously implemented similar arrangements with the Philippines, France, and Australia.
