Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia has completed a joint feasibility study with the United States and Japan on developing small modular reactor (SMR) technology for nuclear power generation, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said Wednesday (17/9/2025).
“(Nuclear energy) is also part of the projects that were covered by MoUs with the US and Japan regarding the technology. Now the feasibility study has been completed,” he stated at a conference, as reported by antaranews.com.
Minister Airlangga added that nuclear energy, viewed as a clean power solution, could take seven to eight years to develop. The government will now prepare licensing and legal frameworks for construction.
The SMR technology, the minister said, can initially generate up to 700 megawatts within four years and can be scaled up in modular increments. Indonesia plans to build two 250-MW nuclear plants by 2034, one in Sumatra and another in Kalimantan, in collaboration with US-based NuScale Power and Japan’s JGC Corporation.
