Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The General Elections Commission (KPU) Hasyim Asy'ari anticipated less intense conflicts in the 2024 Presidential Election in comparison to the 2019 Presidential Election due to the sequence of regional elections preceding the presidential polls.
"We hold an optimistic outlook that the 2024 elections will transpire in a peaceful and democratic manner," KPU Chairman Hasyim Asy'ari said on Wednesday (11/10/23).
He attributed the conflicts in the 2019 Presidential Election to the fierce political competition during the 2017 DKI Jakarta Gubernatorial Election, followed by the simultaneous regional elections in 2018 spanning nearly the entirety of Indonesia. Subsequently, preparations for the 2019 General Election commenced in 2018.
By comparison, in the 2024 elections, political tensions will be lower because regional elections are scheduled for 2024, subsequent to both the presidential and legislative polls.
"With the absence of political competition for regional leadership positions, candidates will concentrate solely on the presidential and legislative elections," Hasyim remarked.
The second indicator, he added, was because the elections that were scheduled for February 14, 2024 required the announcement of results no later than 35 days post the polling date. By March 20, 2024, at the latest, national election results will be disclosed, prompting political parties to closely scrutinize their seat allocations, both in the House of Representatives , Regional People's Representative Council, as well as regional Legislative Council.
Moreover, Hasyim highlighted the potential for parties to forge distinct coalitions in the 2024 Presidential Elections, deviating from their alliances in the ensuing regional elections. Similarly, adversaries in the presidential race may persist as such within the regional context.
"In politics, there are no eternal foes or allies," he assertee.
