Inp.polri.go.id - Ambon. The Maluku Regional Police has formed a strategic partnership with the Australian Federal Police to tackle human smuggling across eastern Indonesian waters.
“This cooperation is a strategic move to strengthen maritime monitoring in areas vulnerable to illegal routes,” said Maluku Police Chief Inspector General Eddy Sumitro Tambunan during a meeting in Ambon on Wednesday (23/4/2025).
The joint initiative involves Indonesia National Police (INP)’s International Relations Division and the INP’s Criminal Investigation Agency, with a focus on the Tanimbar Islands—a known departure point for smuggling due to its proximity to Australia.
Chief Eddy highlighted past enforcement efforts and emphasized the need for continued international collaboration to enhance our personnel’s capacity and tighten surveillance in high-risk zones.
AFP representative Chad Aston Daniel reaffirmed Australia’s commitment through training, equipment support, and community outreach.
