Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin is using defense diplomacy to secure the release of an Indonesian citizen detained in Myanmar.
“I’ve reached out to Myanmar’s Defense Minister through our Foreign Minister, as their protocol requires foreign affairs engagement before any defense contact,” he told reporters at the House of Representatives (DPR) Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday (9/7/2025).
He acknowledged that the diplomatic approach must be sensitive, given Myanmar’s ongoing military coup. Details of the strategy remain undisclosed, but Sjafrie affirmed that defense diplomacy will continue as a key channel for intervention.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that an Indonesian man, identified as AP, was sentenced to seven years in prison by a Myanmar court for allegedly supporting an armed opposition movement. Charges include violations of the Anti-Terrorism Law, Immigration Law, and Unlawful Associations Act.
AP, known on social media as a popular influencer, is currently held in Insein Prison, Yangon.
