Inp.polri.go.id - Ternate. Mount Dukono, located in North Halmahera, North Maluku, erupted at 8.27 am local time on Sunday morning (1/12/2024), releasing a column of volcanic ash reaching 1,200 meters above its peak, as confirmed by the Dukono Volcano Monitoring Post (PGA).
“Yes, the eruption this morning produced ash columns observed at about 1,200 meters above the summit,” said Bambang Sugiono, a PGA Dukono official, in a written statement from Ternate, as reported by antaranews.com.
The ash plume, described as thick and ranging in color from white to gray, drifted northwest.
The event was recorded on seismographs with an amplitude of 20 millimeters and a duration of nearly 277 seconds. Currently, Mount Dukono remains at Alert Level II, or "Caution."
Residents, visitors, and tourists are advised to stay at least three kilometers away from the Malupang Warirang Crater due to the ongoing activity.
“Ashfall occurs periodically, and its spread depends on wind direction and speed,” Sugiono added.
Authorities have urged locals to wear masks and goggles outdoors to minimize exposure to volcanic ash.
