Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian Navy intercepted 2.56 million packs of duty-free Thai cigarettes worth an estimated Rp 97 billion in the waters off Bengkalis, Riau, on 29 June 2025.
"This is part of our ongoing commitment to protect Indonesia’s maritime sovereignty and security," said Rear Admiral Fauzi, the Commander of Fleet Command I in Riau, during a press briefing at Naval Base Dumai on Monday (30/6/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
The contraband, packed in 5,120 boxes of Camclar-brand cigarettes, was seized aboard the KLM Harapan Indah 99, crewed by six men and a Dumai-based captain identified as MH. The ship, which departed from Thailand en route to the Philippines, was detained for lacking customs documentation.
The captain now faces charges under Law No. 17/2006 on Customs and Law No. 17/2008 on Shipping. The vessel and its cargo were escorted to the Dumai naval dock for legal proceedings.
