inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has recorded that the number of drug addicts in Indonesia has reached 3.3 million.

BNN Head, Marthinus Hukom, believes this figure is not merely a statistic, but rather reflects a social phenomenon that threatens the nation's resilience.

"As many as 3.3 million Indonesian children are gripped and trapped by drugs. This is not just a number, but a potential market exploited by crime syndicates," stated the BNN Head on Wednesday (7/9/2025).

He stated that if this figure is calculated using various economic assumptions, the money turnover from drug trafficking in Indonesia is estimated to reach nearly IDR 500 trillion per year.

This figure, he said, includes the state's costs to support the rehabilitation of more than 200,000 drug-using inmates.

"As many as 52 percent of our prison inmates are drug abusers. The state is financing crime, while society is wasting its money on useless things," said the BNN Head.

Furthermore, the Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) also revealed that approximately 90 percent of drugs entering Indonesia are smuggled via coastal routes.

He identified the southern region of West Java as one of the hotspots for smuggling.

"Several years ago, we confiscated more than a ton of drugs in this area. This means that some of our own people are involved, whether consciously or unconsciously, in facilitating the entry of drugs into the country," said the Head of the BNN.

He noted that drug distribution is now not only targeting urban communities but has also reached rural areas.
