Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Papua Regional Police have arrested a 23-year-old Papua New Guinea (PNG) citizen, identified as MA, for smuggling and distributing over 21 kilograms of marijuana in Jayapura.

Officers said the arrest followed weeks of surveillance amid rising drug circulation in the Entrop area of South Jayapura District.

“The arrest was made after our team investigated the surge in marijuana distribution around Entrop,” said Assistant Senior Inspector Agus Kuswanto, the Deputy Head of Sub-Directorate III of Papua Police Narcotics Unit, on Wednesday (1/10/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.

Police intercepted MA on Tuesday morning after spotting him as a passenger on a motorcycle near the South Jayapura District Office. While the driver escaped, suspect MA was caught carrying marijuana in his bag. A search of his rented room uncovered 470 packets weighing a total of 21.3 kilograms.

Suspect MA faces charges under Indonesia’s Narcotics Law, carrying penalties ranging from six years to life imprisonment, or even the death sentence, depending on the court ruling.
