inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has alerted people in five provinces to avoid and evacuate coastal areas until the tsunami warning is officially lifted.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning for Indonesia following an 8.7-magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia, on Wednesday morning (7/30/2025).
BNPB Principal Secretary Rustian stated in a press conference that all stakeholders in North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, North Maluku, Papua, and West Papua should immediately convey this information to the public in a persuasive manner to reduce panic.
BNPB considers this directive crucial to avoid the risk of tsunami waves, which could be exacerbated by narrow bays.
"Coastal areas with bay formations, such as Yotefa, Papua, have the potential to experience wave height amplification. Therefore, the public should evacuate coastal areas," said Principal Secretary Rustian.
He recalled the incident of 2011 Japanese tsunami, which reached Papua with a detected height of only 33 centimeters on a tide gauge, but later reached 3.8 meters in the bay due to amplification.
Therefore, he continued, the public should move away from the coast at least one kilometer and at least one hour before the estimated tsunami arrival time issued by the BMKG and remain vigilant for two to three hours after the first wave arrives.
