inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Kampar Sub-regional Police in Riau Province foiled an illegal transaction of a protected wildlife species, a rare primate, the Agile Gibbon (Hylobates agilis), which was planned to be sold for IDR 8 million.
Kampar Sub-regional Police Chief, Superintendent Boby Putra Ramadhan S, stated that the perpetrator, identified as DE (30), a resident of Salo Village, was arrested by police while attempting to sell the rare primate in the Bangkinang City area on Monday (1/26/2026).
"This arrest demonstrates the authorities' seriousness in breaking the chain of illegal trade in endangered fauna," he said on Tuesday (1/27/2026).
According to Boby, during a search of the location, officers discovered a distressing sight: the Agile Gibbon was hidden inside a cigarette box.
When questioned by officers, the perpetrator was unable to produce any ownership permit or other official documents. This confirms that the animal's presence in the perpetrator's hands is completely illegal.
Head of the Kampar Sub-regional Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Police Inspector Gian Wiatma Jonimandala, revealed that suspect DE admitted to receiving a down payment of IDR 500,000 via bank transfer from a prospective buyer, whose identity is currently being investigated.
"For his actions, DE has been charged under Article 40A paragraph (1) letter d in conjunction with Article 21 paragraph (2) of Law Number 32 of 2004 and Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems," he concluded.
