Police Uncover Syndicate Trading 223 Kg of Illegal Pangolin Scales

Inp.polri.go.id - Lamandau.  The joint-team of Lamandau Sub-regional Police and the Central Kalimantan Regional Police, arrested three people and seized 223 kilograms of pangolin scales, a protected wildlife species, in a crackdown on the illegal wildlife trade."In the course of uncovering this case, we were able to arrest three suspects," Lamandau Police Deputy Chief,Assistant Superintendent Samsul Bahri said. The suspects were identified as W (36), P (23) and AR (22). The case was uncovered during a raid conducted by a joint team from the Lamandau Regional Police Criminal Investigation Unit and Narcotics Division in Melawi Regency on Sunday. The on-duty officers stopped and inspected a passing red Toyota Calya car, which carried nine cardboard boxes containing pangolin scales. "From the examination, we establish that that the owner of the pangolin scales was P, the collector was W and the delivery person to the destination was AR," the Deputy Chief said Senior Superintendent Erlan Munaji, the Head of the Central Kalimantan Police Public Relations Unit, said the case was being investigated by Lamandau police. The suspects face charges under Law No. 5 of 1990 on the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 5 years and a maximum fine of Rp. 100 million.
