Inp.polri.go.id - Banda Aceh. The torch relay for the National Sports Week (PON) XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024 officially commenced from Sabang on Tuesday (27/8/2024). 

The event will see the torch travel across 23 districts and cities in Aceh, according to antaranews.com.

The relay was launched by Acting Mayor of Sabang, Andri Nourman, in the presence of the Chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Aceh,  Kamaruddin Abu Bakar and local officials. 

The torch was initially lit from sulfur taken from Mount Merapi Jaboi, Sukajaya. It was then paraded around Sabang, first to Tugu Menara Merah Putih and then to the Mayor's office, accompanied by cultural performances from local students.

Despite overcast and rainy weather, Nourman expressed satisfaction with the event's progress. 

The torch will next head to Banda Aceh and other districts, concluding in Banda Aceh on 6 September 2024.
