Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) said the murder of a pregnant young woman by her father-in-law in Pasuruan, East Java, was classified as femicide, antaranews.com reported.
"The case of the father-in-law's murder of his pregnant daughter-in-law is considered femicide," Komnas Perempuan commissioner Rainy Hutabarat said on Friday (23/11).
A 23-year-old woman who was seven months pregnant was found dead in her home on Tuesday, allegedly killed by her father-in-law after a thwarted attempt to rape her in their home while her husband was at work.
Femicide is the killing of women by men driven by hatred, revenge, subjugation, control, pleasure and the view of women as property.
Rainy said that femicide is the most sadistic and extreme form of gender-based violence. However, the term femicide is not yet recognised in national legislation.
Komnas Perempuan said that disaggregated police data on gender-based killings or femicide is not yet available, so femicide is still treated as murder in general.
