Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has issued Presidential Regulation No. 109/2025 on Urban Waste Management through Environmentally Friendly Waste-to-Energy Technologies to tackle Indonesia’s growing waste problem, which reaches tens of millions of tons annually.
The regulation indicated Indonesia’s shift toward renewable energy while addressing the waste emergency affecting public health and the environment, according to antaranews.com on Wednesday (15/10/2025).
The new regulation, signed on 10 October 2025, outlines coordination between ministries, Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara, state energy company PT PLN (Persero), and private firms to develop waste-to-energy facilities. Danantara is tasked with appointing operators and investing in commercially viable projects, while PLN must purchase the generated electricity.
Eligible cities must process at least 1,000 tons of waste per day, allocate local budgets (APBD) for waste transport, and provide land for processing facilities. Jakarta will serve as the pilot region for the program, with expansion to follow based on environmental feasibility.
