Inp.polri.go.id - Pekanbaru. Directorate of Special Crimes Investigation of Riau Regional Police succeeded in thwarting pangolins trafficking. The animals were to be sold to neighboring countries at fantastic price per kilo. The animals are used for medical and cosmetic ingredients.
Besides securing evidence, scales of this protected wild animal, officers also arrested two perpetrators, IR (45), a resident of Jambi Province and RE (31) a resident of Inhu Regency, Riau Province.
Chief of Public Affairs of Riau Regional Police, Police Grand Commissioner Sunarto, said the suspect's modus operandi was to resell the pangolins scales at IDR 2 million (USD 125) per kilo, Monday (07/19/21).
"The suspect Irwan got the pangloins scales from collectors in Rengat area with the help of Erwin. Total evidence we confiscated from this suspect was 15 kilograms," Police Grand Commissioner Sunarto said.
Riau Regional Police is still investigating and developing relationship between suspects IR and RE with other suspects because the incident took place in different area.
"For his actions, the suspect is charged with Article 21 paragraph (2) letter d in conjunction with Article 40 paragraph (2) of Republic of Indonesia Law No. 5 Year 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and its Ecosystems in conjunction with Article 55 of Criminal Code with penalty of 5 years in prison," Chief of Public Affairs of Riau Regional Police concluded.
