Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai has urged the Indonesian National Police (INP) to thoroughly investigate a series of terror incidents targeting activists and social media influencers following their criticism of the government’s handling of floods and landslides in Sumatra in late November 2025.

He stressed that freedom of expression is constitutionally protected and should not be silenced through intimidation. 

“Any form of terror against citizens exercising their right to express opinions must be investigated to identify both the motive and the perpetrators,” Minister Pigai said in an official statement on Friday (2/1/2026), as quoted by antaranews.com.

Minister Pigai also reminded public figures to deliver criticism responsibly, warning against unverified narratives or personal attacks that could mislead public opinion. According to him, criticism must remain fact-based and proportional.

Several influencers, including DJ Donny, Sherly Annavita, and Chiki Fawzi, reported threats ranging from physical intimidation to digital harassment, while Greenpeace Indonesia confirmed similar threats against one of its activists.

Minister Pigai rejected claims that the state was behind the attacks and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting democratic space. Meanwhile, the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) has invited affected activists and influencers to apply for protection, pledging swift and comprehensive assistance.
