Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian Navy welcomed its first submarine rescue vessel, KRI Canopus-936, in Jakarta on Monday (11/5/2026) in a. ceremony attended by Deputy Defense Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto, Indonesian Navy (TNI) Commander General Agus Subiyanto, and Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali.
"This is the first submarine rescue ship we have owned," Admiral Ali said during a press conference, as cited by antaranews.com
KRI Canopus-936 is the result of a strategic collaboration between German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R) and state shipping company PT Palindo Marine Service, boasting a domestic component level of 60 percent.
The vessel is a technological powerhouse, equipped with hydrographic survey launchers (HSL), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).
These tools allow the ship to conduct detailed hydrographic, oceanographic, and geophysical surveys of the seabed. Beyond its rescue capabilities, the ship is designed for critical military operations, including submarine path mapping, sea mine detection, maritime intelligence, and deep-sea Search and Rescue (SAR) missions.
To ensure peak performance, 93 specialized Navy personnel have undergone seven months of rigorous training in Germany, France, and Indonesia to master the ship’s advanced systems.
