inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Transportation is preparing regulations to mandate the use of vehicle safety technology to improve national standards, reduce the risk of fatal accidents, and complement education, law enforcement, and road user protection.

Yusuf Nugroho, Director of Road Transportation Facilities and Safety at the Directorate General of Land Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, stated that this will be formulated as an implementation of government regulations, which will be outlined in a Ministerial Regulation.

"The plan is for this regulation to cover safety programs and determine stakeholders responsible for various aspects, including technology that supports road safety," he said, as reported by Antaranews on Saturday (1/10/2026).

Yusuf Nugroho explained that the government is opening up opportunities for its use as widely as possible, with the stipulation that the technology must make a significant contribution to safety.

"Safety needs to be agreed upon and used as the basis for implementation by all parties. The government has policy stages that ensure technology can develop more rapidly, especially if regulated through ministerial regulations," he said.

He emphasized that efforts to improve road safety are not intended to diminish the role of education, law enforcement, or the responsibility of road users.

Instead, he said, strengthening vehicle safety standards is seen as a second layer of safety that works alongside behavioral changes, particularly in mitigating fatal risks due to human error.

"The government itself actually has ample room to regulate the implementation of safety technology as a standard for two-wheeled vehicles, such as quality helmets and internationally standardized braking systems," he explained.

He also mentioned that neighboring countries like Malaysia have implemented such policies, following a two-year study by the country's Ministry of Transportation. Braking system technology like ABS was designated as a mandatory standard for new motorcycles because it has been proven to reduce accident and fatality rates by up to 30 percent.
