inp.polri.go.id - Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said authorities had recovered the bodies of two suspected British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian tribal expert Bruno Pereira, who went missing in the Amazon last week. "The evidence leads us to believe something bad was done to them, because human organs were found floating in the river, which is now being DNA tested," Bolsonaro told CBN radio Recife on Monday (13/06/22) as quoted by AFP. Philips' nephew, Dominique Davies, said the family was currently awaiting confirmation from federal police regarding the DNA test. Meanwhile, Phillipis' brother-in-law, Paul Sherwood, said the Brazilian Embassy in the UK had also informed the chronology of the discovery of the two bodies. "He did not describe the location, only said that the two bodies were found in the forest tied to a tree, but have not been identified," he added as quoted by The Guardian. Previously, the authorities had also found a number of items belonging to Philips and Pereira including a medical card, black pants, black sandals and a pair of boots belonging to Bruno Pereira, and a pair of boots and a backpack belonging to Dom Phillips which contained personal clothing, the Amazonas state Federal Police said in a statement. The Amazonas Fire Department said that that several items were found near the home of the alleged kidnapper, Amarildo Costa de Oliveira. The police also said that the search team explored a 25 square kilometer area of roads and forests, particularly in the area where the alleged perpetrator's boat was found. Several eyewitnesses also said Oliveira had chased the two people to the upstream. Phillips, a veteran contributor to The Guardian, and Pereira, Brazilian tribal expert, were reported missing last week after they received death threats while traveling to Brazil's Javari Valley. The Amazon forest area itself is often becomes the location for illegal fishing, logging, mining, even t drug smuggling. Phillips and Pereira traveled together to the Javari Valley by boat to conduct interviews on environmental conservation books. The two were spotted on June 5, not far from their destination, the City of Atalaia do Norte.
