inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) said that there was a decrease in plastic waste leakage into the sea by around 41.68 percent or equivalent to 256,614 tons of waste from 2018 to 2023.

Assistant Deputy for Waste and Waste Management of the Coordinating Ministry for Marves, Rofi Alhanif said that in 2018, there was a leakage of 615,675 tons of waste into the sea.

"By the end of last year, we were able to reduce around 41.68 percent from our position in 2018. In terms of numbers, this is quite good, there has been a decrease of 256,614 tons, with data processed by the National Coordination Team for Handling Marine Waste (TKNPSL) showing that the amount of plastic waste leakage in 2023 reached 359,061 tons," explained the Assistant Deputy, Friday (4/10/24).

The Indonesian government previously targeted a reduction in the amount of plastic waste ending up in the sea by 70 percent by 2025 as stated in the National Action Plan for Handling Marine Waste (RAN PSL).

However, there are several challenges that must be addressed to achieve this target. Some of these issues include the level of waste collection that is not yet optimal, the budget for waste management systems and inadequate human resource capacity.

"Our waste collection is not yet optimal, especially in rural areas or areas where waste services are still very weak," said the Assistant Deputy.

In addition, there is the fact that plastic consumption is increasing along with population growth, the waste system at ports and marine tourism objects is not yet optimal, public awareness still needs to be improved and the land and sea waste data management system is not yet integrated.
