According to the survey of Transportation Policy Board of Transportation Ministry, there are 107 millions of people who travels during Christmas and 2024 New Year Eve. “There are 107 million or 39% of people travelling to their hometown or higher than last year which are quite challenging for us,” says Minister Budi Karya Sumadi on Tuesday (12/19/2023). Minister Budi states that among 40,000 respondents, majority of them chose to travel with their own cars. Other than it is more practical, the road infrastructure development, including toll roads, are also played in factor of why people chose to use private cars. Moreover, 17% of other respondents chose to travel by motorcycle. Minister Budi, in response to this, implores public to consider use free travel facility provided by State-owned Enterprises or private company to suppress traffic accident numbers. “I have sent my letter and I hope the letter could be informed by medias as these free travel facilities are beneficial for those who want to celebrate their holiday at their hometown,” explains Minister Budi. In addition, the survey also lists around 13% of people celebrates the holiday or travel to hometown by trains. Then 11% travel by airplane, 10% by bus, and 3% by ships. However, the ministry acknowledges that every transportation has its own challenges that has to be anticipated well. Minister Budi has asked for the formation of monitoring post in every sector to mobilize and directly monitor the situation to ease the communication between personnel in the field, institutions, and the ministry. “We have to build some kind of posts, either in central government, down to the level of every transportation modes such as trains, busses, ships, and airplane to enable us monitor the situation directly,” suggest Minister Budi.
