Inp.polri.go.id - Tokyo. Bank Indonesia's Tokyo office is exploring the use of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) as an official payment system in Japan.

"We aim to have QRIS used in Japan and have invited the Payment Japan Association to recognize the significant potential of the Indonesian community in Japan. We hope that Indonesians visiting Japan can utilize QRIS," said Imaduddin Sahabat, the Head of Bank Indonesia Tokyo, during the Indonesia-Japan Festival 2024 on Sunday (20/10/2024).

He noted that they have been processing the QRIS license since last year, which is currently under review by Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) and the Ministry of Finance.

 "We are awaiting FSA approval. Technically, there are no issues, but they are expanding its usage," Imauddin added, as quoted by antaranews.com

QRIS is already operational in several ASEAN countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. 

Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Heri Akhmadi, emphasized that QRIS would simplify financial services for Indonesians in Japan and tourists. With around 420,000 Indonesians traveling to Japan this year, the ambassador hoped QRIS will be implemented by early 2025.
