Inp.polri.go.id - Rio de Janeiro. Leaders of BRICS nations officially adopted the Rio Declaration during the 17th BRICS Summit, held on Sunday (6/7/2025) at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Under Brazil's chairmanship, the declaration reaffirmed BRICS' collective commitment to strengthening multilateralism and reforming global governance systems to create a fairer, more inclusive, and democratic world order.
“We reaffirm our commitment to reform and improve global governance by promoting a more just, equitable, effective, representative, and democratic international and multilateral system,” the leaders stated in the official declaration, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The declaration emphasized the urgent need to modernize the international system, which BRICS considers outdated and unreflective of 21st-century geopolitical realities.
A key point in the declaration was the call for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, to ensure that global challenges are addressed equitably and inclusively.
BRICS leaders also pushed for greater representation of developing countries from Africa, Asia, and Latin America in international decision-making processes.
A significant moment of the summit was the formal admission of Indonesia as a full member of BRICS. The bloc also recognized several countries as partner nations, including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
Beyond geopolitics, the Rio Declaration includes strategic cooperation in several priority areas. BRICS adopted BRICS Climate Finance Framework Declaration, Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence Declaration and BRICS Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases
