inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Health states that fasting, when performed properly, fosters harmony between body, mind, and spirit. Fasting offers many benefits for mental health, and is becoming more relevant in facing the current challenges.
Imran Pambudi, Director of Health Services for Vulnerable Groups at the Ministry of Health, stated that experts recommend several steps for optimally implementing fasting to support mental health, such as setting spiritual goals, focusing on mindfulness, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and sharing experiences with the community.
He stated that Ramadan is often a time for reflection and self-improvement, but it can also influence trends in mental disorders. According to data from Surabaya State University (Unesa), the rate of mental disorders in Indonesia, such as anxiety and depression, remains high, with approximately 1 in 20 adolescents diagnosed with a mental disorder.
"However, during Ramadan, many report a decrease in stress and anxiety symptoms thanks to the practice of fasting and spiritual activities," said Director Imran.
Furthermore, a study conducted at MAN 2 Cilegon City in 2019 showed that fasting contributed 98.01 percent to improving students' mental health. This study highlights how the self-control and increased spirituality that occur during fasting help students develop better emotional regulation, thereby improving their happiness.
"The Sirjan Azad University study found that individuals who fast exhibit stronger self-control, which has a positive impact on their mental health. Researchers found that this self-control during fasting helps individuals remain calmer in the face of life's stresses," he explained.
