Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Head of Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Marthinus Hukom, said that a significant amount of the country's drug supply comes from Myanmar and Afghanistan via maritime routes. "It's widely known that most drug imports originate from Myanmar and Afghanistan," he said on Friday (22/3/2024), as reported by antaranews.com. According to data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), both countries are major global sources of narcotics. UNODC identifies Myanmar as a key player in the drug trade alongside Thailand and Laos, while Afghanistan is the world's largest producer of opium, a key ingredient in narcotics. Chief Marthinus emphasized ongoing collaboration with the Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) to combat drug trafficking by sea. In addition, he highlighted visits by himself and regional BNN heads to Malaysia and Singapore to strengthen cooperation in curbing cross-border drug trafficking. "Our goal is to enhance border security and prevent illicit drug trade across international boundaries," Chief Marthinus said. He stressed continued dialogue with counterparts in neighboring countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand to address drug-related issues collectively. "We're planning a trip to Myanmar to assess law enforcement efforts and analyze the situation together," Chief Marthinus added. He underscored the importance of the joint efforts involving BNN , domestic and international partners to combat the drug trade. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
