Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia and Japan have agreed to deepen trade cooperation within the ASEAN region in response to the United States' reciprocal tariff policies during a meeting between Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati and her Japanese counterpart Katsunobu Kato at the ASEAN+3 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting.
“Our shared cultural, geographical, and historical ties form a strong foundation for ensuring regional stability and prosperity,” shei said on Monday (5/5/2025)via her official Instagram account, as quoted by antaranews.com.
Minister Sri Mulyani highlighted Japan’s past experience with U.S. tariffs in the 1980s, calling it a valuable reference point as ASEAN+3 faces a similar global trade dynamic. Indonesia, she added, has engaged with the U.S. and received a positive response for initiating early tariff negotiations.
The two ministers also discussed broader concerns over the escalating tariff war’s impact on global industries, especially automotive and electronics, which are dominated by the U.S., Japan, China, and Europe.
