Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia expressed concern over the escalating security situation in the Middle East and urged Iran and Israel to exercise restraint.

"Indonesia urges the UN Security Council to take immediate action to de-escalate tensions and continue efforts to create peace in the Middle East," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through social media X on Sunday evening.

Indonesia urged the UNSC to immediately stop the illegal occupation of Palestine and various violations of international law by Israel.

In this regard, Indonesia reiterated that a fair resolution of the Palestinian issue through a two-state solution would be key to achieving regional security stability.

The recent hostilities between Iran and Israel were sparked by an attack on the Iranian Consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1. The attack killed at least seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two senior generals. Iran blamed Israel for the fatal attack.

Iran then launched a retaliatory attack by firing dozens of ballistic missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel on Saturday night (13/4).

According to Israel, the attack was successfully thwarted and only hit a military airbase in Israel - but did not cause serious damage.

At Israel's request following the Iranian attack, the UNSC will hold a meeting on Sunday afternoon local time.

Israel urged the UN to openly condemn Iran's response to Tel Aviv's aggression, despite over the past six months since the start of the war in Gaza, Israel has strongly criticized and disregarded the UN.
