Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Acclaimed Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar has been awarded the Chevalier (Knight) of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, recognizing his contribution to cinema and global cultural dialogue.
The honor was presented in Paris on Thursday night by France’s Minister of Culture Rachida Dati.
“Through genre films, I try to talk about injustice, power, and humanity, issues that are often difficult to address directly,” Joko said during the ceremony, as reported by antaranews.com on Friday (12/12/2025)
The award acknowledges his two-decade career as a director and screenwriter whose works have gained both critical and commercial recognition in Indonesia and internationally. French officials highlighted his distinctive use of horror, thriller, and comedy to engage wide audiences while conveying social messages.
The recognition comes as Joko Anwar prepares his upcoming film Ghost in the Cell, scheduled for release in 2026. The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is among France’s highest cultural honors, previously bestowed on leading global artists and filmmakers.
