Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP), the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the regional disaster response teams (BPBD), evacuated mothers and infants stranded in severe flash floods that hit multiple districts in Sukabumi, West Java.
Assistant Senior Inspector Dadi, the Sukabumi Sub-regional Police Head of Samapta Unit, described the rescue operations as extremely challenging, with floodwaters reaching 80–90 cm, submerging homes and cutting off roads.
Samapta refers to the police unit focused on public order and security in Indonesia.
“Floodwaters surged into narrow alleys, making access difficult. Using inflatable boats, we rescued mothers and babies trapped in their homes,” he said on Wednesday (4/12/2024).
Despite limited resources and strong currents, the joint rescue teams managed to save several infants.
“The process was tense and demanding, but we’re relieved everyone was safely evacuated,” Chief Dadi added, as quoted by antaranews.com.
Second Brigadier Delfano, the Sukabumi Police Public Relations officer, noted the challenging field conditions, with water levels waist-high in some areas. Local authorities continue to prioritize evacuations and support for affected residents.
The flash floods, caused by prolonged heavy rain, also triggered landslides and overflowed rivers across 18 areas. While no casualties have been reported, officials urged residents to stay vigilant as rain persists. Damage assessments are underway.
