Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Jayapura City Sub-regional Police’s Narcotics Unit foiled attempts to smuggle 22 kilograms of marijuana from Papua New Guinea (PNG) between January and May 2025.
“Narcotics officers managed to prevent the smuggling of 22 kilograms of PNG marijuana and arrested 21 suspects,” said Jayapura City Police Narcotics Unit Chief, Assistant Senior Inspector Febry Pardede, on Saturday (7/6/2025). “This is a serious effort to curb the drug trade along our borders.”
Among the 21 suspects arrested, six are foreigners— five from PNG and one from Egypt — while the rest are Indonesian citizens.
Most of the marijuana was smuggled through footpaths in Jayapura City and Keerom Regency, both of which border PNG. In addition to these hidden trails, smugglers also used the sea route via motorized boats.
“The marijuana is mostly acquired through bartering for electronics like mobile phones and motorbikes, although some deals involve direct cash transactions,” Chief Pardede noted, as quoted by antaranews.com
