inp.polri.go.id - Yogyakarta. A joint operation by Yogyakarta Customs and Excise and the Yogyakarta Regional Police successfully thwarted the smuggling of 9,540.8 grams of liquid methamphetamine, or approximately 9.5 kilograms, disguised in wet tissue packaging.

The operation took place at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, and marks a historic drug bust in the region since the airport opened international routes in 2020.

Two suspects, AP (27), a Lampung resident, and MNF (29), a Malaysian citizen, were arrested after being caught carrying 10 packages of wet tissues that turned out to contain liquid methamphetamine.

This method is relatively new and difficult to detect, because unlike crystal methamphetamine, which is packaged in tea bags or smuggled through the body, the liquid methamphetamine is absorbed directly into the wet tissue sheets.

The discovery began on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 11:45 am when Yogyakarta Customs officers were analyzing the arrival of AirAsia flight AK 346 from Kuala Lumpur to Yogyakarta. The passenger, identified as AP, drew attention for carrying a suspicious suitcase that contained a stack of orange tissues labeled "100 sheets" per pack.

Further narcotics testing revealed the tissues contained liquid methamphetamine, weighing a total of 9,540.8 grams.

The investigation revealed that AP was merely a courier who had been asked to deliver the items to someone in the airport pickup area. Officers then coordinated with the Yogyakarta Regional Police, Angkasa Pura Airports, and YIA's Avsec to conduct a controlled delivery.

A Malaysian man, identified as MN, who acted as the "pickup person" and "checker," was apprehended in the arrivals lobby.

From the results of the interrogation of AP and MN, it was discovered that the mastermind of this network is a Malaysian citizen who still resides in his country. The two perpetrators are now threatened with being charged with Article 114 Paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 Paragraph (1), or Article 112 Paragraph (2) of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
