Indonesian President Joko Widodo stressed that unity and centrality of ASEAN still remains strong. “As part of family members and chair of ASEAN, I want to stressed that ASEAN unity remains strong as ever,” says President Joko Widodo during his opening speech of the 43rd ASEAN Summit. However, he said, this unity does not come without challenge. According to him, the difference of opinion only makes democracy runs stronger. “It would only show us as an equal member of the same family,” says Jokowi. Jokowi says that equality lately have become a rare commodity in the world, seeing how many injustice and conflict due to the absence of that aspect. “But in here is different. Equality instead become our main value that we respect and uphold together in unity so that this big ship of ASEAN could still continue sail forward,” said Jokowi. It is worth noting that the 43rd ASEAN Summit was held under the theme of “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth”. The theme was hoped to make ASEAN stays relevant in facing various challenges in the future and safekeeping stability and peace in the region.
