Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Law and Human Rights disclosed that around 500 inmates are currently on death row, awaiting execution due to the absence of clear regulations governing the timing of capital punishment.
“Imagine being sentenced to death without knowing when it will be carried out, this uncertainty is a serious problem,” said Dhahana Putra, the Director General of Legislation at the ministry, during a public consultation webinar on the Draft Law on the Implementation of the Death Penalty on Friday (31/10/2025).
He explained that the proposed bill, soon to be submitted by President Prabowo Subianto to Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani, would require executions to be carried out within 30 days after a decision is issued.
Dhahana added that under the new Criminal Code taking effect in January 2026, the death penalty will be treated as an ultimum remedium, a last resort and alternative punishment to life imprisonment or a 20-year sentence.
