Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The Jakarta Metro Jaya Regional Policehave arrested two Malaysian citizens in connection with an illegal access scheme using fake SMS messages containing phishing links to steal victims’ banking information.

“In this case, three suspects are involved,” said Superintendent Reonald Simanjuntak, the Metro Jaya Police Head of Public Information sub-directorate, during a press conference on Tuesday (24/6/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.

The suspects  — two in custody, identified as OKH (53) and CY (29), and one at large, identified as LW (35),  impersonated major banks, sending fake messages about expiring reward points with embedded phishing links. Clicking the link led victims to a fake login page, allowing suspects to gain unauthorized access to bank accounts and drain funds.

One victim reportedly lost Rp 100 million (approx. $6,000).

Police traced and arrested the suspects in North and Central Jakarta on 16 June 2025. The group allegedly used SMS-blasting devices to target mobile users across Indonesia.

They face up to 12 years in prison and fines up to Rp 12 billion under Indonesia’s revised Electronic Information and Transactions Law.
