Inp.polri.go.id - Pekanbaru. The Special Crime Investigation Directorate of the Riau Regional Police has been investigating the the killing of a trained elephant discovered dead and tusks missing in the Tesso Nilo National Park (TNTN). The inquiry was initiated after an examination by the TNTN management revealed the presence of poison in the body of the 46-year-old elephant. "The Riau Regional Police are currently conducting an investigation," said Senior Superintendent  Nasriadi, the Director of Special Crime Investigation at the Riau Police over the weekend. The investigation stemeds from the findings of Jumadi, the elephant handler,  or known as mahout, who found that the elephant named Rahman had died with its left tusk missing on Wednesday. "The mahout initially came to feed Rahman fruits. However, Rahman did not respond after being called several times. Rahman was found in a weakened state, with the left tusk missing," said Heru Sutmantoro, the Head of TNTN. Despite the first aid given, Rahman could not be saved. "Based on the necropsy results, there is a strong suspicion that Rahman was poisoned before its tusks were removed. After Rahman's death, we reported the incident to the Ukui Police Station, Pelalawan Police Resort," Heru said. (ar/inp/pr/nm)
