Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has approved the construction of a 700-kilometer sea wall from Banten to East Java to protect coastal farmland from rising sea levels.
“This project is crucial to safeguarding North Java’s rice fields,” said Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy Hashim Djojohadikusumo at the ESG Sustainable Forum 2025 over the weekend, as reported by antaranews.com.
The idea was first proposed in 1994 but was never executed.
Envoy Hashim, who is also the brother of President Prabowo, estimated the project would take 10–20 years to complete, stressing that without it, fertile farmland could be lost.
“It’s never too late to protect millions of hectares of productive land,” he said.
President Prabowo has ordered a review of the Jakarta–Cirebon sea wall as a 2025 National Strategic Project.
Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto confirmed it would integrate with existing flood barriers in Semarang and be funded through a Public-Private Partnership to support national food and energy security.
