Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Head of Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom, said on Thursday (24/10/2024) that preventive measures are more effective in combating drug trafficking than imposing the death penalty on offenders.

“Progressive laws should not only focus on corporal punishment or the death penalty but aim to shape human cognition, fostering awareness,” he said, as reported by antaranews.com.

Chief Marthinus explained that although capital punishment has been used, it hasn’t deterred others from engaging in drug crimes.

Instead, he advocates for preventive strategies, such as community education and improving life skills.

"We focus on family development, education, and social approaches in communities vulnerable to drug trafficking," he added, believing that consistent efforts to guide society away from drug-related crimes will ease future eradication efforts.
