Riau Islands Regional Police Uncovers Illegal Land Usage in Rempang Island

inp.polri.go.id - Riau Island. The General Criminal Investigation Directorate of Riau Island Regional Police uncovers a land criminal action committed by a perpetrator with the initials of BY (62), an entrepreneur who is also the Executive Director of PT AE.

In this case, the suspect allegedly went against the law by taking and using the land owned by BP Batam in Rempang Island, Batam City with an area of around 175.39 hectares.

Head of Public Relations of Riau Islands Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Pricillia Ohei said that the case started from a police report dated on September 15, 2023.

On the other hand, the Director of Criminal Investigation of Riau Islands Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Ronni Bonic, noted that the case relates to the illegal use of land whose permits have been revoked by the authority.

“Even though the permit has been revoked and has received a notification letter and a demolition order from BP Batam, PT. AE is suspected of still using the land. Based on the Decree of the Environment and Forestry Ministry Number 785 of 2023 and Number 643 of 2024, the land status has become an Other Use Area (APL) under the authority of BP Batam,” explains Ronni.

As a result of this crime, BP Batam is unable to manage approximately 175.39 hectares of land, which is part of the strategic development area of ​​the Rempang area.

In this case, investigators secured various legal documents demonstrating PT AE's activities and business permits, as well as decrees from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Governor of the Riau Islands, and the Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam). A total of 23 pieces of evidence have been submitted to the Public Prosecutor.

Suspect BY is charged under two articles: Article 50 paragraph (2) letter a in conjunction with Article 78 paragraph (3) of Law Number 41 of 1999 concerning Forestry, as amended by Law Number 6 of 2023 concerning Job Creation, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of IDR 7.5 billion; and Article 167 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 9 months' imprisonment.
