inp.polri.go.id – Surabaya. The Surabaya Police Criminal Investigation Unit managed to arrest seven suspects in the Joint Selection Entrance to State Universities (SBMPTN) jockeying syndicate. The suspects were arrested at the UPN Veterans Campus, Surabaya on May 20, 2022.
There are five suspects from Surabaya, namely MJ (40), RHB (23), MSN (34), ASP (38), MBBS (29), and IB (31), while the other two, MSME (26) is from Sulawesi and RF (20) is from Kalimantan.
The coordinator of this jockey syndicate is MJ. Regarding how the jockey works, the syndicate members work according to their respective roles. "There are those who act as jockeys, assembling communication tools, briefing teams, operator teams, and master teams," said the Surabaya Police Chief, Police Commissioner, Achmad Yusep Gunawan, at Surabaya Police HQ, Friday (15/7).
After MJ received the SBMPTN exam participants, the briefing team went to the prospective participants. The team explains how to install and use the pre-assembled communication tool.
When the exam time arrives, participants will take pictures of the questions to be sent to the operator team. This team then sends the questions to the master team, who will work on the questions. Furthermore, the answers to the questions will be sent back to the operator team. The operator will read the answers through the microphone used by the participants.
The rates for the jockeys range from Rp. 100 million to Rp. 400 million.
"This jockey syndicate has been running for a long time," said Yusep. "Based on the suspect's statement, in 2020, 41 participants were able to graduaten and the jockeys got paid for around IDR 2.5 billion. Then in 2021 there will be 69 people with various majors and various universities, with a fee of around IDR 6 billion.”
Furthermore, the police revealed various evidences including: 25 long-sleeved shirts and one short shirt that had been modified to install cameras, 66 modems, 58 communication devices, 64 cameras, 44 microphones, 4 account books and 4 ATM cards, 5 cell phones, laptops, and several fake IDs.
The suspects were sentenced based on Article 32 paragraph (2) Sub. Article 48 paragraph (2) of Law no. 19 of 2016 concerning amendments to Law no. 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions jo. 55 of the Criminal Code.
