inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Canadian International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen expressed Canada's readiness to help Indonesia develop nuclear energy as an alternative resource when responding to climate change.
"Canada has extensive experience and expertise related to nuclear resources, and we want to share it with Indonesia," said Canadian International Development Minister Hussen on Friday (2/14/2025).
He said that his party understands that Indonesia has identified nuclear power as an alternative to meet the increasing national energy demand while maintaining emission levels amid climate change.
Given that the development of nuclear resources in Indonesia is still in its early stages, the Canadian Minister said that his party is ready to assist Indonesia in terms of developing the nuclear energy ecosystem, regulations, and funding.
Meanwhile, cooperation in the nuclear technology aspect can take place at a later stage.
"We must understand that beyond technology, there are still funding aspects, technical aspects, and other aspects that must be prepared," explained Canadian Minister of International Development Hussen.
Indonesia and Canada are known to have explored cooperation in the field of nuclear development. In the ASEAN-Canada Special Summit in October 2024, the Indonesian and Canadian delegations discussed the proposal for cooperation in the development of small modular reactors (SMR) as an affordable and safe source of nuclear energy.
