Inp.polri.go.id - Lewoleba. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) cofirmed that the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in the Sawu Sea, East Nusa Tenggara, poses no tsunami threat.
"Stay calm, there's no need to panic," said Margiono, the Head of the Kupang Geophysical Station, on Sunday (24/3/2024)..
The quake struck at a depth of 41 km, 128 km southeast of Ende at 11.04 am local time. It was a shallow tectonic event resulting from active fault movement beneath the seabed, with a horizontal uplifting motion.
The tremors reverberated across multiple regions, including Ende, Larantuka, Waingapu, Bajawa, Maumere, Sabu, and even Bima in West Nusa Tenggara.
Margiono urged the public to disregard false earthquake-related rumors, stressing that all official updates originate from BMKG.
"Keep calm, there's no reason to panic," he reiterated.
