Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Banten Regional Police arrested suspects involved in Java rhinoceros poaching at Ujung Kulon National Park in Sumur District, Pandeglang Regency, Banten.

Banten Police Deputy Director of Criminal Investigation, Superintendent Dian Setyawan, disclosed on Friday (26/4/2024) that the arrested suspects, identified as YP and WY, were respectively from Matraman, East Jakarta, and Kenjeran, Surabaya.

YP acted as a rhino horn seller from another suspects, identified as N who acted as the humber,, while WY was the buyer.

YP was caught on 17 March 2024 in Matraman, Jakarta, and WY on 23 April 2024 in Permata Ancol, North Jakarta.

Their arrest stemmed from the capture of N on 26 November 2023.

The case emerged after a report from Ujung Kulon National Park officers, who spotted armed individuals hunting Java rhinos. The group, including N, had been hunting rhinos since 2020, resulting in six rhinos killed.

The horns were sold for Rp 200-300 million, with YP profiting only Rp5 million, the rest going to N.

YP and WY face charges under Law No. 5 of 1990 on Conservation of Natural Resources  and Ecosystems.
