A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the southeastern region of Pangandaran, West Java, late Monday night, with tremors felt across Central Java areas including Cilacap, Kebumen and Banyumas as well as West Java’s Garut and Tasikmalaya, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed.
The quake occurred at 11.55pm, with the epicenter located at 8.09°S, 108.71°E, about 49 km southeast of Pangandaran at a depth of 70 km, according to BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono on Tuesday (10/6/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
The tremor is classified as a moderate-depth intraslab quake, triggered by oblique thrust fault movement within the tectonic plate.
No tsunami threat has been identified, and as of 00.20 am, no aftershocks were recorded.
BMKG urged residents to stay calm, verify information from credible sources, and avoid reentering damaged buildings without proper safety checks.
