Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 19 aftershocks that hit Berau, East Kalimantan, from early Sunday until Monday morning (16/9/2024).
"The aftershocks ranged from 4.2 to 2.8 in magnitude as of 9 am," said Daryono, theHead of BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, on Monday, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The strongest quake, with a magnitude of 5.6, struck Batu Putih, Biduk-Biduk, Berau, on Sunday at 9.08 pm local time. According to BMKG, the quakes were caused by activity along the Mangkalihat fault and were not linked to the megathrust zone or tsunami potential.
Daryono urged residents to stay vigilant, adding, "This event serves as a reminder for East Kalimantan residents to remain cautious and follow government guidelines."
East Kalimantan was previously hit by a major earthquake in 1921, with an intensity of VII MMI.
