Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono has officially lodged Indonesia’s interest in joining BRICS, affirming the nation's commitment to an independent and active foreign policy.

BRICS an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.

“Indonesia’s aim is to engage actively in global forums rather than align with specific blocs,” he said during the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan, Russia, on Thursday.

In his official statement released on Friday (25/10/2024), Minister Sugiono highlighted three key goals for Indonesia within BRICS: promoting sustainable development, advocating for multilateral reforms to make systems more inclusive and representative, and strengthening BRICS as a unifying force among developing nations.

He also noted that BRICS aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s priorities, including food and energy security, poverty reduction, and human resource development.

As a bridge between developed and developing countries, Indonesia plans to deepen its engagement in other international forums.

President Prabowo is scheduled to join the G20 Summit in Brazil next month, and Minister Sugiono has been invited to a G7 meeting in Italy, according to antaranews.com.

At the summit, Indonesia was formally recognized as a BRICS partner, joining 12 other countries, including fellow Southeast Asian nations Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
