Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia's Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, has set a 2025 deadline for the completion of the new medium-security Kumbang Prison on the Nusakambangan prison Island, Central Java.

He emphasized that the new facility aims to alleviate overcrowding both on the island and across the country. 

"The facility must be ready, and so must the staff," Minister Yasonna said, noting the planned capacity of 496 inmates.

He recently inspected the installation of smart prison technologies and the control room at the Class II A Ngaseman Prison, which operates with maximum security and houses 98 inmates in two blocks.

Minister Yasonna highlighted the importance of discipline and integrity among prison staff. He was accompanied by key officials, including the Acting Director General of Corrections Reynhard Silitonga and the Head of the Central Java Regional Office, Tejo Harwanto.

On 19 July 2024, he and his team conducted a security assessment around Nusakambangan Island by boat to enhance surveillance and prevent security issues. Currently, Nusakambangan Island hosts 11 prisons with varying security levels, from minimum to super maximum security.
